What is Anxiety?

Anxiety can feel overwhelming. If you have anxiety symptoms you may feel out of control and always on guard. You may worry that it will never end, but anxiety is treatable. Therapy can help you understand your anxiety, learn how to cope with it, and take steps to manage it.

What is Anxiety Disorder?

Anxiety Disorders are divided into six basics types:

  1. Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD)
  2. Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
  3. Panic Disorders
  4. Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD)
  5. Social Phobia (Social Anxiety Disorder)
  6. Specific Phobias

Each anxiety disorder has different symptoms, but all the symptoms have a common theme of extreme, irrational fear and dread.

Some Common Symptoms of Anxiety:

  • Feeling nervous, restless or tense
  • Having a sense of impending danger, panic or doom
  • Having an increased heart rate
  • Breathing rapidly (hyperventilation)
  • Sweating
  • Trembling
  • Feeling weak or tired
  • Trouble concentrating or thinking about anything other than the present worry
  • Having trouble sleeping
  • Experiencing gastrointestinal (GI) problems
  • Having difficulty controlling worry
  • Having the urge to avoid things that trigger anxiety
