What is Anxiety?
Anxiety can feel overwhelming. If you have anxiety symptoms you may feel out of control and always on guard. You may worry that it will never end, but anxiety is treatable. Therapy can help you understand your anxiety, learn how to cope with it, and take steps to manage it.
Some Facts About Anxiety:
- Before COVID19, an estimated 18.1% of Americans struggled with anxiety.
- Since COVID19 began, 41% of Americans report feelings of anxiety.
- Only about 37% of people with anxiety receive treatment.
- Women are 60% more likely to experience anxiety disorders than men.
- Anxiety disorders often occur along with other mental or physical illnesses, including depression and alcohol or substance abuse, which may mask symptoms of anxiety or make them worse.
What is Anxiety Disorder?
Anxiety Disorders are divided into six basics types:
- Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD)
- Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
- Panic Disorders
- Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD)
- Social Phobia (Social Anxiety Disorder)
- Specific Phobias
Each anxiety disorder has different symptoms, but all the symptoms have a common theme of extreme, irrational fear and dread.
Some Common Symptoms of Anxiety:
- Feeling nervous, restless or tense
- Having a sense of impending danger, panic or doom
- Having an increased heart rate
- Breathing rapidly (hyperventilation)
- Sweating
- Trembling
- Feeling weak or tired
- Trouble concentrating or thinking about anything other than the present worry
- Having trouble sleeping
- Experiencing gastrointestinal (GI) problems
- Having difficulty controlling worry
- Having the urge to avoid things that trigger anxiety
